IALAC

Do you remember this acronym?  Or did you ever do this activity in school?  Sometimes it was my absolute favorite, and sometimes I dreaded that time of year.  Anyway, the gist of it was this:  You made your very own IALAC sign.  You got a sheet of paper, wrote the letters IALAC on it, (meaning I Am Lovable And Capable), and if you were me, drew some beautiful flowers or swirlies around the letters.  Then you taped a string to the sign, and wore it around your neck all day.

(This person has obviously endured emotional trauma).
The activity was to wear the sign in class all day...and if anyone was to hurt your feelings you'd tear a piece off of it, the size corresponding with the amount of "hurt" that they'd inflicted. And if someone made you feel good about yourself, you would then glue or tape a little piece of the sign back on.  They don't do this anymore, as obviously it was a LAME idea.  You had the kids that would say mean things to you just to watch you tear your sign up, and then you had people say things that weren't sincere or true in the attempt to help you fix it back up again.

I remember that one year a girl told me that I was "fat and dumb and I couldn't even play tetherball". I hated her.  3/4 of my beautiful sign was ripped off by first recess.  Yeah, I'm talking about YOU, Amy "Fern" Hulet.  But I have forgiven you now, because I was told a long time ago that you went to college and got really fat.  And everyone there thought you were an enormous b!t@h. And regardless of whether or not that was true, it made it so that I'm not still harboring hard feelings. (In fact, had I been wearing an IALAC sign at the time, I totally would have taped a huge chunk back on). And btw?  I totally kicked your @ss in tetherball, Amy.  And you know it.

Anyhoo, I'll get to my point.  Though the idea was dumb at best, it did leave a lasting impression on me.  In fact, there are times when I get my feelings hurt, or I find out that I hurt someone else's feelings, that I wish there was a sign that told me or who I'm with, what's what.   So I'm trying to be better aware of what I say, and how it affects others.  So that's that.  This post originally started out with me totally ripping into a certain someone...and I thought that maybe I should be nicer.  Well, here I am...being nice.   Boooriiiing.  But I'm growing as a person, right?
New topic. This last week was kind of a nightmare.  Jeff had jury duty Monday through Friday.  Monday through Thursday he was gone for about 6 to 8 hours each day, and then Friday he was gone for 15 hours.  Being used to him being gone a total of 18 hours a week, I was put-out by his absences each day.  Add into the fact that Cole was sick, and then Syd got pink eye in both eyes, and we were trying to get our house ready for our realtor to check out...It was beyond annoying.  I ate a lot of chocolate.  And did a lot of caulking.  And somehow made an already messy house even messier after hours of "organizing".
All I'm saying is that getting a house ready to sell sucks.  Getting a house ready to sell while having an MIA husband and sick kids, is even worse.  But on the other hand, if we can't sell it, we now have our small home just the way we want it.  So, win-win.  Right?
Let me say that I do love our house.  And Kass and Amy, if Syd had never come along, we wouldn't be moving for like, 50 more years.  I know our neighbors suck, but I really like it here.  I have met some great people here, and made friends.  So if it turns out that we're here for a while I'm okay with it.  We're a bit scrunched, but in the broad spectrum of things, we can pay for it, and we are happy.  I don't think you can ask for much more than that, you know?  But I still can imagine myself suddenly becoming a millionaire and having like, three rooms all to myself just for my crap.  Even a happy girl can reach for the stars.

And one last thing:  It was doppleganger week or something on Facebook.  And I couldn't think of anyone that I look like....except maybe Kelli Osborn? I mean, if she still had dark hair and some moles and still ate meat?  I don't know.  I was told recently that I look like Jodi Piccoult.

And, uh...I didn't see that resemblance at all.  But it got me thinking, we all see ourselves differently than others do, I think. My brother Jason told me that I remind him of Kat Denning, and that wasn't bad at all.  MUCH better than Jodi Piccoult.  What do you think?  Any ideas?  Don't worry, I refuse to wear an IALAC sign ever again, so there will be no physical evidence of crushing my self-esteem. ;)

Stupid Amy Hulet! She was a bitch. Glad to hear she turned into a fatty, although I'm not too surprised due to her shape back then. Those IALAC signs. I barely remember them, but I do recall tearing pieces off and sticking them back on. And after a few hours losing interest.

I cannot wait to hear about your move! I wish, wish, wish it was to WA.

Doppelgangers? Well, those 2 suggestions are pushing it, but I have no clue. I don't know mine either. And frankly, the amount of thought given to it was quite minimal.

I don't think I have ever heard of that activity. Was it a Wyoming thing? I am not quite sure what I would think if my kids came home and had done that at school. I can seriously see other kids hurting other kids feelings on purpose just to see how much they rip off. Or just making a huge joke out of it. That is sad since it might be helpful activity if the kids would actually participate willingly and responsibly. Anyway, good luck selling your house. We didn't have to sell our last house and buying and moving alone was stressful enough. I think we will live here the rest of our lives. HA HA

Have you guys lived in your house for 5 years? If so, if you sign a contract by April 30th, you can get a tax credit of $6500.
That game sounds degrating.
That's a bummer about jury duty, that's a long time to be in service. I thought it was only supposed to be a day or two.
Good luck to you guys!

If you need help with anything on your house let me know. That game sounds messed up. I'm not so sure about Wyoming.

Hmm...Maybe IALAC WAS just a Wyoming thing. Another "Kick 'em while they're down" approach to life that if pondered upon, may have some insight into the adult I am today.

And I've noticed everyone has pretty much steered clear of the doppelganger stuff. That's okay. I guess I just have one of those truly unique faces...which I would be happy to believe if I hadn't always heard: "You look/remind me of my mom/sister/cousin", from every guy I was ever interested in. (Except Jeff). And a couple of times I've been asked, "What ARE you?" And "Asian" has been guessed more often than not. So, I'm thinking that I'm not the only one that finds this thing difficult. Stupid Facebook and its random activities. Stupid me for giving it some thought.

And if we move, you will all hear numerous things about it. And you'll hear numerous things about it if we don't. And Kory, thanks for the offers of help. I may take you up on it, even if Jeff won't. ;)

And, I thought we would qualify for the 8,000 tax credit, cause we've been in this house 8 years?

Keri said...

No, the $8000 is for people who haven't owned a home for the last 3 years. People who've been in their house for at least 5 years qualify for the $6500. Sorry.

Poooop. Not overly surprising, however.

I love the part where you said that you ate a lot of chocolate, and after hours of organizing, you made the house even messier. Those comments sound like me... Funny! About the IALAC thing, I wonder if that would be a good communication skill between husband and wife so they could see how their words affect their spouse... just a thought, but it probably is a bad idea.

that sounds like a sad game, i've never heard of it before. i would totally be the kid with the messed up sign, at least if i wore it to work... nuf said.

I am pretty sure if I ever had that sign I would have torn the ENTIRE thing up the first commment someone said to me, because I would be totally hurt and dramatic about it.

I too have been thinking of the stupid Facebook game and people I look like, and can't come up with anyone. I have been told lots of different things in my life. In elementary school I was told Gia from full house and was totally hurt for years, because I wanted to be stephanie! (and that boy would have gotten my entire sign) But turns out Boys think Gia is way hotter, says Kory :) I think you are by far much more stunning then either of those people.

AND I totally hate that the girl who was so mean to you has my name.

You really do have a very unique face which is a great thing! Better than getting the - you look just like lily allen comments! Good luck with the move - we would totaly sell our house if it didn't mean a huge loss.

That game does a great job at making kids think what other people say controls how they feel...I definitely won't be using it.

Thanks for this post!! It made me laugh so hard! I must have moved to buffalo post IALAC because I have no memories of this but was definately interested in what happened to Amy Hulet. Awesome. Hey-Moriah made it seem like states are out for grabs-Move to CO! Cost of living is pretty cheap-so are houses and the people are relatlively normal! Wish I was there to help with organising and stuff.
